Business Journalist
Hello. I’m Kelly Dilworth Campbell.
I’m a freelance writer, editor, longtime business and consumer finance reporter, communication designer and occasional illustrator.
I’m primarily based in Toronto, Ontario. However, I also keep a business address in my hometown of Corpus Christi, Texas.
With a personal and financial presence in both countries, I specialize in covering business, technology, lifestyle, financial services and the intersection between money and life in the United States and Canada.
Need help producing trustworthy,
accessible content for diverse audiences?
Let’s talk: kelly@kellydilworth.com
I have more than a decade of experience producing deeply reported, top-quality business and personal finance content that empathizes with and engages readers and helps inform their decision making.
As a longtime freelance writer and business reporter, I’ve published hundreds of articles on a wide variety of topics and excel at excavating information and identifying new and undercovered angles.
I also work as a freelance editor, fact checker and ghostwriter for subject matter experts and am particularly adept at helping authors sharpen their ideas and retool their prose for a target audience.
Plus, I’m not just a wordsmith: As a recently trained illustrator and communication designer, I can also help you strategize content and tell stories visually with stylish infographics and illustrations.*

Why hire me?
I have an excellent track record.
My byline, “Kelly Dilworth,” has appeared in a variety of news and personal finance outlets, including The Balance, The Messenger, USA Today Blueprint, Yahoo! Finance, MSN, NBC News, Fox Business, LivFun and Time.
I’ve also written and edited niche personal finance content for major financial publishers, such as Bankrate and LendingTree, as well as smaller outlets.
In addition, I’ve helped select financial services brands, including Synchrony, Sallie Mae, Simplii and Scotiabank, strategically drive traffic with useful financial education content.
My work makes an impact.
Over the years, my reporting has been cited in major outlets, such as The Washington Post and Newsweek, in several books and law review articles and in congressional testimony and reports by groups, such as FinReg Lab, Consumer Action, Public Interest Research Group (PIRG), the Consumer Data Industry Association (CDIA) and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).
In fact, a number of stories that I wrote and reported over a decade ago have gone on to be cited years later by researchers and consumer advocates.*

I’m an ideas person who loves to learn.
I grew up wanting to be a journalist because l loved the idea of getting paid to learn. As a reporter, I dig deep — mostly for the story’s sake, but also because I’m curious (read: nosy) by nature and feel driven to know and understand more.
I can find something interesting in just about anything — number-filled spreadsheets and other “dry” materials very much included — and thrive when given the chance to learn or try new things and work on challenging projects.
I especially appreciate creative and/or open-ended projects with healthy room for discovery and experimentation.

I have a B.A. in Liberal Arts from Sarah Lawrence College (2007) and a postgraduate certificate in graphic design and visual communication skills from OCAD University’s School of Continuing Studies (2023).
Earlier in my career, I worked in book publishing — first as a literary assistant at a Washington, D.C. literary agency (now known as Ross Yoon) that primarily represented journalists and experts and then as a junior editor at an Austin, Texas-based education publisher called Prufrock Press.
My first job out of college was a paid internship at The Atlantic. I also interned in the mid-aughts at The New Yorker and The American Prospect, as well as at the Washington, D.C. think tank, The Century Foundation.
I was born and raised in South Texas, but moved to Toronto in 2018 with my Canadian husband and son. My husband was a postdoctoral researcher in physics for the first six years of our marriage. So we have also lived, more recently, in Columbus, Ohio, and Irvine, California.
I’ve been a professional member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors (ASJA) since 2017 and a professional member of Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) since 2021. I joined the Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ) as an associate member in 2024.
I’m proud to have worked with many of the same clients for years. But it’s time for new challenges, and I am now eager to expand my client list.
