Business Journalist

Hello. I’m Kelly Dilworth Campbell.

I’m an American-Canadian writer, reporter, editor, designer and occasional illustrator.

I’m primarily based in Toronto, Ontario. However, I also keep a business address in my hometown of Corpus Christi, Texas.

With a personal and financial presence in both countries, I specialize in covering business, technology, lifestyle, financial services and the intersection between money and life in the United States and Canada.

Need help producing trustworthy,
accessible content for diverse audiences?

I have more than a decade of experience producing deeply reported, top-quality business and personal finance content that empathizes with and engages readers and helps inform their decision making.

I’ve published hundreds of articles on a wide variety of topics and excel at excavating information and identifying new and undercovered angles.

As a recently trained illustrator and communication designer, I also help clients strategize content and tell stories visually with stylish infographics and illustrations.*

Why hire me?

I have an excellent track record.

My byline, “Kelly Dilworth,” has appeared in a variety of news and personal finance outlets, including USA Today Blueprint, The Messenger, The Balance, Yahoo! Finance, MSN, NBC News, Fox Business, LivFun and Time.

I’ve also written and edited niche personal finance content for major financial publishers, such as Bankrate and LendingTree, as well as smaller outlets.

In addition, I’ve helped leading financial services brands, such as Synchrony Bank, Sallie Mae, Simplii and Scotiabank, strategically drive traffic with useful financial education content.

My work makes an impact.

Over the years, my reporting has been cited in major outlets, such as The Washington Post and Newsweek, in several books and law review articles and in congressional testimony and reports by consumer advocacy groups, such as the FinReg Lab, Consumer Reports, Public Interest Research Group (PIRG), the National Consumer Law Center (NCLC) and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).

In fact, a number of stories that I wrote and reported more than a decade ago have gone on to be cited years later by researchers and consumer advocates.*

I’m an ideas person who loves to learn.

I grew up wanting to be a journalist because l loved the idea of getting paid to learn. As a reporter, I dig deep — mostly for the story’s sake, but also because I’m curious (read: nosy) by nature and feel driven to know and understand more.

I can find something interesting in just about anything — number-filled spreadsheets and other “dry” materials very much included — and thrive when given the chance to learn or try new things and work on challenging projects.

I especially appreciate creative and/or open-ended projects with healthy room for discovery and experimentation.

What else?

  • I have a B.A. in Liberal Arts from Sarah Lawrence College (2007).

  • I also have a postgraduate certificate in graphic design and visual communication from OCAD University’s School of Continuing Studies (2023).

  • I’ve participated in or audited a number of postgraduate cohort-based courses in business, entrepreneurship and multimedia storytelling (through OCAD University and the University of Toronto).

  • I’ve studied creative writing through Catapult, Creative Nonfiction, Barrelhouse and American Short Fiction and audited courses in visual storytelling and comics through the Sequential Artists Workshop (SAW).

  • I’ve been a professional member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors (ASJA) since 2017 and a member of Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) since 2021.

  • Earlier in my career, I worked in book publishing — first as a literary assistant at a Washington, D.C. literary agency that primarily represented journalists and experts and then as a junior editor at a small education press in Austin, Texas, that published instructional materials for gifted and twice-exceptional students.

  • My first job out of college was a paid internship at The Atlantic. I also interned in the mid-aughts at The New Yorker and The American Prospect, as well as at The Century Foundation where I served as a research assistant to Richard D. Kahlenberg and helped newly identify more than 40 U.S. school districts pursuing socioeconomic integration.

  • I was born and raised in South Texas, but moved to Toronto in 2018 with my Canadian husband and son. My husband and I moved around a lot when we were younger (often for his career as an astrophysicist-turned-data scientist) and so I’ve also lived and worked in Austin, Texas; Columbus, Ohio; Irvine, California; Bronxville, New York; Gastonia, North Carolina; Washington, D.C. and New York City.

  • As a longtime freelancer, I’m always looking to expand my roster of clients. If you’re looking for an exceptional writer, reporter, editor, fact checker, communication designer or illustrator who can help you produce engaging and high-quality content, get in touch: kmdilworth@gmail.com
